The concept of Perception Based Engineering is essentially to integrate the generally neglected area of the human responses into system and product design. To understand the complex field of Perception Engineering let’s consider a simple Computer Printer machine. A Printer, irrespective of its level of sophistication generates text and images but it also produces noise in the process. While designing a printer and coming to identify what constitutes a good printer the user’s perception on the level of sound or for that matter image quality is not given much of attention. Reducing noise, an annoyance to users and enhancing the sound attributes which is music to the ears is a difficult proposition. In case of a typical workstation a large group slogging it out with a single printer there might be issues of speed which is equally critical than noise or print quality. But any increase in speed might aggravate the noise. So what does the poor designer do?
Perception Based Engineering aids specifically in meshing a people-centric and people-sensitive criteria with an integrated design approach. In this process engineers work in tandem with psychologists for developing prototypes of human information processing as well as decision making. The models of stimulus-prediction, decision-making and perception are all interconnected. This results in better exploring, comparing and optimizing of design options to lessen the negative impacts and heightening the positive ones.
Under the aegis of DIT research projects in Perception Engineering are executed at six institutions namely CEERI-Pilani, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Mumbai, Jadavpur University Kolkata, IIIT- Hyderabad and C-DAC-Kolkata. It is expected to give a boost to enhance competencies in different aspects of Perception Engineering under research at the participating institutes. Some of the highlights of the project include development in the areas of Cognitive Science and Perceptual Psychology, Brain Modelling, Visual Perceptions, Hearing Perceptions, Artificial Sensing- Haptics, Taste and Smell, Perceptual Robotics, Algorithms and advanced computer architectures for machine perceptions.
