The centre for Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (NEMS) and Nanophotonics is being created at IIT Madras with the following aim and scope:
- Setting up of nanofabrication facilities at IIT Madras
- Developing nanofabrication processes for the materials: silicon, GaAs and other III-V compounds, Silicon nitride, Silicon oxide, polysilicon and silicon on insulator (SOI)
- Material diagnostics in nm scale
- Design and modeling of devices
- Process optimization for specific nanostructures like nanocantilevers, nanopores, nanoporous membranes, nanowires
- Setting up measurements for accurate testing, characterization and reliability
- Technology transfer and incubation of companies based on products developed
